Singles Going Single #191 - Swizzle 7" (199?, Cassiel)

Got some more mystery indie rock goodness to share with you.  Purchased this single many, many moons ago, and upon bringing it home discovered that it was sans an inner sleeve, and for that matter an insert with any useful information regarding the record in question.  I'm afraid all I have to go by is a Cambridge, MA address on the rear of the sleeve - not even the year of release on the physical record labels or nuthin.'  Highly inconvenient on my end of the stick, because with such a ubiquitous moniker as Swizzle, a search engine query yields zilch in terms of pertinent details.  That means we're left with *gulp* just the music itself.  Luckily Swizzle's fuzzy strain of left-of-the-dial guitar pop is of sizable, not to mention winsome merit.  Side A delivers a pair of buoyant, rhythmically conscious jewels, doled out with seemingly effortless agility.  The lone B-side composition, "Tricycle" is considerably more subdued and pensive, before peaking to a dissonant crescendo roughly half-way in.  I'm not going to draw any comparisons here.  For a change, I think I'll leave that up to you.

A1. Bliss
A2. Who's That Lady
B. Tricycle

I'm glad I'm not the only one that owns a copy of this. At least I *think* this is still in my collection. Fantastic blog, btw.

I want to say this was made in either '98 or '99.

Also, the copy you have is exactly the same as mine that is to say there are no liner notes included.

Cassiel was a great albeit short-lived label with some fun indie-pop bands. Their Dreamboat compilation is still one of my favorites.

Great upload!

Sparky- could you perhaps upload that Dreamboat compilation? Definitely some great obscure bands on there like Spare Snare, Cat's Miaow, Pie, Twig, and Holiday. And obviously Olivia Tremor Control. I'd love to check that out.

Thanks for your comments folks. I don't have the Dreamboat comp you mentioned, so it's all up to you sparky.

Hi -

Cassiel was my label. Thank you for your very kind words; I do believe that there were some terrific releases on the label, and (someday) may sorta revive it.

This single was issued in 1997, and featured musicians local to the Boston, MA indie community.

Unlike some of the releases, none of the folks who appeared here are 'known for something else,' but this is a fine release. They did put out one full length; their drummer and manager Kristen Girard may be findable somewhere on the interwebz.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of the other releases. I am reachable at danhedonia@hotmail.com

Hi Dan,

Thanks for commenting. Guess that solves the mystery on the date. Is their a Cassiel discography on discogs.com or elsewhere?

Hey there,

I'm a little late to the party, but I'm a member of the band Swizzle. We did put out a full length. It's on Bandcamp now: https://swizzle-band.bandcamp.com/releases, and one of these days on Spotify, etc.

All the best,
Kevin
