Nyack (ex-Aenone) - 11 Track Player (1995, Echo)

In response to my Aenone post a little while back, someone requested some tuneage from Nyack, essentially Aenone rechristened with a new moniker, and more significantly, an almost entirely renovated sound. As anyone who has listened to their two eps will tell you, Aenone were through-and-through dream-pop on par or superior to most of their early '90s counterparts. Strip them of their flange and distortion pedals (most of 'em that is), and accord them with an appreciation of those fabled three chords, and voila, you've got yourself a Nyack on your hands, my friends. 11 Track Player oozes power-pop aplenty, touching upon Superdrag, Teenage Fanclub, and the numerous likenesses thereof, with perhaps the only anomally being the closing "Sunrise In My Head," offering a little Jesus & Mary Chain headiness. I've been told that "Savage Smile" was the emphasis track here, and furthermore was made a single. You can hear more Nyack trax from the band's above linked Myspace page.

Nyack - I'm Your Star ep (1995, Echo)

Before the weekend is over, I'm going to try to get something resembling a full length up, but here's a loooong belated followup to Nyack's 11 Track Player I shared over a decade ago!  Almost forgot I had this accompanying ep, featuring "I'm Your Star," one of the highlights from the LP, and three otherwise unavailable b-sides.  And b-sides appropriately enough they are given they're the chilled out in yin to 11 Track's distortion soaked power pop yang.  While nothing here is particularly revelatory, the reaction to Nyack's aforementioned album (and two EPs from the group's earlier guise, Aenone) were so well received I didn't want to deprive you any longer.

Aenone - Red ep (1992); Saints & Razors ep (1993, Kokopop)

Aenone were a downstate New York act from the early-90s, who embraced the Shoegazer movement with what appears to have been every fiber of their collective being. Glistening chords, flange, fuzz, and Craig Sterns generally hushed vocals dominated their meager recordings. Sublime. Delectable. All that good stuff.

Though they were archetypal of the genre, Aenone devoured what was going on across the pond (Lush, Chapterhouse, et al) but also gave a wink and a nod to home turf dream-poppers, Fudge and The Drop Nineteens.

This post encompasses two eps - Saints and Razors, released on Kokopop Records fifteen years ago, and an earlier work, the six-cut Red ep, the latter of which I have no physical evidence to prove it was ever commercially released. After Saints and Razors, Aenone were forced to change their moniker, settling on Nyack, their hometown. Nyack released a couple of eps under their own name, and an LP, 11 Track Player. Much can be read on Aenone and Nyack on their respective Myspace destinations, hyperlinked above. Aenone have reunited and are reportedly preparing an album.
