Swimmers - Whippings 10" (1994, Quixotic)

This rather flimsy 10" record marks my first and only acquaintance with London's Swimmer, and indeed I was not familiar with this trio when they were active. I was however very much down with the record label (Quixotic) responsible for it's release, and when I happened across it while used record browsing I had the good sense to take it home. To my pleasant surprise I was treated to two engaging sides of noise-pop, the kind that was concurrently being banged into shape by this band's wholly unrelated Stateside counterparts St. Johnny and Sometime Sweet Susan. "Whippings" left me with the impression Swimmer had wrapped their ears around a Wire single or two, albeit unlike Elastica there's minimal plagiaristic aftertaste.  The considerably lengthier, not to mention jammier, "Boxes" ups the drone ante a notch and vaguely forecasts what the Strokes would (sort of) take to the bank.  The prolonged riff that stemwinds its way through the song's dense six minutes is either tantamount to a sonic treat...or an endurance test.
