I didn't know much about this record going into it, but for some reason I had the notion that
Civil Rice was going to have some serious full-tilt hardcore punk in store. Turns out I was only 9% on the mark, with merely the whirlwind, minute-plus "Black Fag" matching the loud and fast ideal I had assumed was going to be the prevailing modus operandi here. Hailing from Milwaukee,
Einstein's Riceboys were in actuality a synth-reared post-punk cabal, and not a very catchy one at that. Fusing together elements from their side of the pond (Devo, Pere Ubu) and the other (Gang of Four), the Riceboys sport their homegrown, DIY tomfoolery to an iidiosyncratic fault.
Civil Rice is an often incohesive, art-punk mess, though not quite the full-on disaster that some of it's sketchier moments lead you to believe is beckoning just around the corner.

Thanks for the Riceboys! I live just outside MKE and was in highschool when these boys were playing out in the pubs & clubs. I'm re-posting this on my blogspot (credit given to you) along w/ the Riceboys' 1981 release 'Milk Of Amnesia'(to be uploaded soon).

Einstein's Riceboys rocked Madison, WI in the early 1980s
Todd Rusch and his brother Sheldon were from Wauwatosa, WI and singer Steve Whalen was from Beaver Dam, WI.
Todd is in Austin.

Picked this one up from a local record shop in Hartford Ct around the time it was released. Never really knew anything about the Riceboys, and it's been ages since I've heard "bloated life"...remembered a few of the lyrics though.
