Bender - tape (1993)

Thought this would be a fitting follow-up to Pollen.  Bender were from Toronto.  They had some singles and a full length, Funny Kar, out on Ringing Ear Records, but this preceded those releases from what I can recount.  Chunky, no frills riff-pop along the lines of their more famous neighbors to the east, the Doughboys, but Bender had some jammy inclinations too.  Two thirds of these catchy cuts would be rerecorded for their one and only album (to my knowledge), the previously mentioned Funny Kar.  These guys were almost indispensable to me back in the day, but in retrospect they strike me as merely satisfactory.  Not that I'm complaining.  Enjoy (or not).

Yep, I pulled out Funny Kar for a listen myself yesterday. They kinda strike me as being a bit tame for you Brush...

Nah, "Funny Kar" was a regular listen for me for years, up til about 6 or 7 years ago when my ears finally got tired of it. I even had a 2nd copy, from the the firesale that Ringing Ear had when they went out of business...

Fantastic! Never heard this one before, or even knew it existed. Loved the Ringing Ear LP (Funny Kar), and even more than that I adored the "Soap Opera" 7". Played the heck out of it on my college radio show back then. I think it still holds up pretty well.

Bender are friends of mine, and they're doing reunion shows around Toronto this weekend. I'm driving up in a few hours.
