This is where I walk out the door...

Q:  Can a band's studio outtakes vastly exceed the quality of their officially released product?

A: Yes!   Here are sixteen power poppin' examples.

  1. From my memory I think you are very correct that these demos are much better than the released tracks. My recollection is that when I finally heard their "lost classic" power pop album I thought it was fine but not outstanding. I'd have to go back and listen, but either way I am liking this as good power pop.

  2. I didn't know this artist, but I did quite like it. Many thanks. Reminded me of the Shoes, or the Records.

  3. This is really good, and agreed. Sounds a lot like Shoes and The Records.

  4. Glad you enjoyed. These guys reminded me of another band of the same era called the Producers. Check themout too.

  5. I think I have The Producers on LP. If so, I'll check it out.

And I thought of another case where the demos are much better than the released material -- Matthew Sweet's first two (pre-Girlfriend) solo albums. The demos I have heard of the same material are much better than the released stuff, which in my view (of course) suffers from some then-current production approaches.

  6. I checked. I don't have The Producers. I think I looked for that record so long I ended up thinking that I had it. So, I'd be interested to see if it lives up to the praise.

I did play the LP by the artist whose demos you have here. Better than I recalled but still not near as top-rate as the demos.
