Yesterday, it was pointed out to me by a reader that they were unable to take advantage of free downloads via Rapidshare. The long and short of it all is that they've simply moved things around a bit. After selecting the download hyperlink on any given entry on these pages, you'll be taken to a slightly revamped Rapidshare site where the "free" option has been relegated to the bottom of the page, whereas before they had the free and paid choices side by side. Not terribly confusing, and hopefully not much of a hoop for you folks to jump through. Mediafire may be in the offing for Wilfully Obscure, but I'll never have an adequate amount of time (especially this summer) to transfer the nearly one-thousand files that Rapidshare is hosting for us. More on this as it develops, that is if anything significant develops at all.

Yeah, they seemed to trying a few looks out recently and have settled on this one. It takes a little longer than it used to, which was already longer than Mediafire, but I don't know how anyone can mind it, considering.
Just as an FYI from another reader, I don't get a RapidShare page that requires me to scroll to the bottom for the free download--I wish I did. What I get is far worse.
When I click on a RS link and choose the free download, I have to wait more than five minutes; not 15 to 60 seconds like the other services that make you wait. Then the download link is active for a minute or two, so don't stay away too long doing something else or you have to start all over again. After I download the file I cannot download anything else from RS for at least an hour and a half.
I avoid RS download links like the plague.
MediaFire and the Multiupload Direct links allow me to make several downloads simultaneously, with no waiting. I like 'em!
Rapidshare has got the five minute wait now but then the stuff i grab from this blog is generally worth its wait in gold....its cool
Rapidshare does have the 5 minute wait now but it least you don't get harangued by the Ads like to get on Mediafire. I have an ad blocker etc but Mediafire hits me with ads when I first click on the site link AND when I click on the actual download link and often when I try to close the ads they shut down Firefox completely and I have to start again. Most annnoying!
My main issue with Rapidshare is that if you are trying to download more than one file you have to wait like 95 minutes between downloads. I much prefer Multiupload or Mediafire
I also think that Rapidshare kinda sucks now. Maybe we shouldn't complain too much about free stuff, but there are alternatives that are better (at least, for now) - you might want to consider switching for new stuff...
Hey there
Rick and salvager. After downloading one file from rapidshare I find that if I briefly disconnect, than reconnect to the internet I get assigned a new IP address so Rapidshare thinks I'm someone new so no 95 minute wait to download the next
Thanks for your comments. Well, the jury is still out, at least for now. Rapidshare’s five minute waits (and then some) are an unreasonable obstacle to all of you that don’t have a paid/premium account. My main pet peeve with Mediafire isn’t so much hosting, but all the spyware it seems to dump onto my system whenever I grab a file on their server. Maybe better spyware would do the trick. Haven’t given any consideration to Multiupload yet but will do so.
If anything else, I have better luck with Firefox than IE, but I sympathize with your dilemma Graeme.
I’ll be following up this entry in a few weeks. My apologies for being so indecisive.
